Globally over 100 million people are displaced, and that number continues to grow. Australia has the power to do something about this and can provide a pathway to peace and a permanent future for some of world's most vulnerable families. (Write your ideas for this campaign below. We are all at risk of becoming Internally Displaced People or Refugees at some point. Campaigning for safe pathways to asylum is not about charity, it's about recognising that all human beings are equal in rights and deserving of a safe place where to live and prosper.
I would like priority accorded to the approximately 7000 refugees failed by Fast Track and who have been here for more than 10 years. Also those medivacced here from offshore detention and the 30 odd men still trapped in PNG, some of them now with families.
- Direct advocacy on these issues to all MPs and Senators utilising AIA’s reputation and existing relationships and the Amnesty Parliamentary Friendship Group - Working closely and collaboratively with others on the refugee sector including RCOA, ASRC, grassroots refugee advocacy groups, and Amnesty’s own activists - Developing and implementing a comprehensive media strategy for both mainstream and social media. Amnesty staff need to have a high profile media presence, particularly in mainstream media (including interviews, reporting, documentaries, and high profile TV shows such as The Project, Q&A etc) in order to change the hearts and minds of the Australian community – and put pressure on politicians
Utilising activists to make the community aware of the issues and to change community attitudes. This could include: • Activists making their views visible by wearing or displaying badges, T-shirts, shoulder bags, caps etc. Needs to be up to date, well designed and have impact • Activists making their views visible by using an email tag line on all emails • Media coverage by press articles, OpEds and letters to the editor • Media coverage on radio and TV • Effective social media • Visual stunts • Church Bells ringing • Community events
